Community service is part of the soft skills we try to instill into students. Today, as part of the mentor-mentee weekly gathering, we listened to each and every student's experience doing community service.
Everyone was asked to sit or stand up in front of the class and narrate his/her experience. The exercise itself was good, as everyone was "forced" to speak in front of his/her colleagues, sharpening his/her public speaking skill.
Most of the mentees had the opportunity to do community service, be it during their school time, PLKN or even university time. While some involved cleaning up hospitals, schools, rivers and beaches, some others were more fortunate to have done community services in geriatric home, orphanage, Down Syndrome's, etc where there were interactions with human being. (Not forgetting, one who helped "homeless" cat)..
One had done community service in as far as India, Indonesia and Thailand. One, who had just returned from China, envisaged doing her community service there..
It took nearly two hours. However, I am here to say that I am proud of my mentees.
For those who have yet to get your hands dirty, you will have your turns soon.
Remember, community service is something necessary as it is a way we give back to our community...
